Baby Guardian well baby clinic

andrea de wetHi, my name is Andrea de Wet.  I studied Nursing at the University of Port Elizabeth (1992 – 1995) and followed up my degree by working at a Private hospital in Port Elizabeth. From there I moved into the pharmaceutical industry, where I remained for several years until my husband and I relocated to Gauteng.

Although I was a registered nurse by profession and had spent many years in the maternity, post natal and nursery units of the hospital, I was very unprepared when my eldest daughter arrived in 2002. But we coped; we had to! And I soon realized just how awesome parenting was. I fell pregnant with my twin girls in early 2004; and two weeks after they were born, we moved up to sunny Midrand where we are still happily settled.

My husband, Alastair, and I are very passionate about Godly parenting and have had the honour of being involved in Christian parenting courses over the past 10 years. These courses have been instrumental in shaping us and our children’s lives and we love sharing these principles with like-minded couples!

Compared to when our parents were young, I think we have a disadvantage with all the media hype and the many “well meaning” people that try to help and offer advice. I believe that the most important thing a new mom needs is confidence in herself and a good old dose of common sense; something we all have and need to find within ourselves!

I have many dreams, as I’m sure we all do. One of those dreams was to open a baby clinic to help new moms transition into parenting more comfortably and as “well informed” as possible.  Another was to help reach the “child-headed homes” in South Africa’s rural areas by providing immunizations and Health awareness to the many families represented there. I am excited to say that both these dreams are coming to pass!

I am proud to introduce Baby Guardian Vaccination Clinic to you!

desiree haakonsenHi! I’m Desiree Haakonsen; Andrea’s friend and the voice that you will often hear talking to you across the social media networks. I have so much respect for Andrea and what she is doing with her well baby clinic. My children were some of Andrea’s first patients, and we attended a few of her first parenting courses, and I can genuinely that say that I trust her with our lives. Watching Andrea chase her dreams and seeing Baby Guardian take shape has been an inspiration and I am so privileged to play a small part in sharing it with you.

As for me, well my story of motherhood is complicated. I always wanted to have kids at a young age, and I am happy say I did…just not quite the way I planned it! To keep things simple, I am 28 and I have the following titles under my mommy-belt: single mom, dating mom, married mom, step-mom, mom-to-a-girl, and mom-to-a-boy. I have 2 GORGEOUS kids of my own, a daughter who is 6 years old and a son who is 2. I also have a wonderful step-son who is 7 years old, but unfortunately doesn’t stay with us. My husband and I have had a rollercoaster of experiences with our little “modern” family, including the stresses of falling pregnant out-of-wedlock, divorce, custody battles, adoption, living away from your child, living with in-laws, the dreaded “there may be a problem with your baby” saga and a host of other intricacies that come with parenting and life in general. But I wouldn’t have it any other way! God has been so good to us every step of the way and I am so grateful for the beautiful family I have been blessed with.

There are so many stories I would love to share with you, but this space isn’t just about Andrea and me sharing our knowledge and stories; we are just as interested in finding out about you! Our aim with this blog is to build an open and honest community, to give insights that guide you and help you feel better prepared for the joys (and challenges) of being a parent!

If you have any questions that you would like answered, please feel free to leave a comment below.

We would love to try to help!
